how it all began…

A couple of years ago I was in a thrift store and found the most beautiful fabric. It was ivory & gold damask and looked like it could have been hung from the valence of a castle (or beautiful home at the very least!). There was yards and yards of it, and it was 3 dollars for all of it. I bought it. I had no idea what I was going to do with it. I didn’t sew. I didn’t need curtains or a table cloth. Or anything made from cloth, really.

A year later my mom gave me a sewing machine for Valentine’s Day, and with it, 8 sewing lessons {Nothing says, I love you, like giving someone a Bernina}. I showed up for the first day of class, and low and behold, I was the only one in the class. Come to think of it, I was the only one in all 8 classes. Maybe that is why I paid attention. In any case, I learned to sew, and left class anxious to make SOMETHING from that beautiful gold fabric tucked away in my bottom drawer.

And hence, the first ditty bag was born. Granted, the first one took me 5+ hours to make… but it was worth it. Not only did I re-purpose that stunning thrift store find but I {without realizing it} started a business. And two years later, I’ve made over 600 ditty bags that now have lives of their owns… all over the world.

Thank you, to my mom, for the sewing lessons. Thank you to whomever dropped that inspiring fabric off at the thrift store. And thank you, to all of you, for investing yourselves in my bags, my blog and my journey.

It’s kinda fun to take a little piece of something that inspires you and just see where it leads….
